Zone Alarm Snafu, Customer Service and Security

Sometimes I have to laugh 'cause I'm soooooo frustrated! I wanted to share a dialogue I had with Zone Alarm tech support this morning:

Just in case you don't want to read through the chat below, and the subsequent emails, here's a recap:

I have ZA on my laptop. Booted this morning, had ZA pop up telling me I could enter to win free iPad, just like 'em on Facebook, download their free firewall, then enter to win.

I zipped over via link, downloaded the free firewall as requested, then went to enter my name and email address, which was all that was required.

When I started to type in my name a FB pop up came up saying that by giving the info I was giving ZA access to my friends, my personal info, etc., etc. I did NOT like that... I'd already "liked" 'em, so why did they need to have access to my friends.

I clicked into tech support and asked "why". First they didn't know there was a promotion, which scared me...what if someone hacked me & I just downloaded a computer bomb???

After long waits, she couldn't find it. So, I said I'd uninstall. She gave me a link to do a quick uninstall... ummm, if it wasn't their firewall then their tool shouldn't have worked, but that's beside the point .

I said I was going to pop over to the FB page and warn everyone, especially since there were over 10,000 who'd done the same thing.

She said "whoa nelly" and decided to investigate a little further.

She found it. But couldn't answer why they needed access... kept completely misunderstanding the question. Said I had to enter to win.... uh... duh.

Finally she said she needed to research and could she email me. Said yes.

Hours later... I got an email saying I had to enter to win.... uh... duh... Gave me the option to reply as long as I typed above the line they had on the email.

I replied.
I got an email back saying it was a no-reply email.
I give up.
First they want info that shouldn't be shared, something you'd think a security company would NOT want... then I can't get tech support to answer a simple question.

Not sure if I'm going to uninstall, but I am rather frustrated 'cause I'd at least like a shot at winning an iPad.

Here's the conversation and emails. Their tech is "L" and I'm "J":

L.: Thank you for continuing to wait. We have not forgotten about you. I will be with you very shortly.

J: ok

L.: Hello J

L: Sorry about the trouble.

L: We have a page on Facebook but to download our program it should have taken you out to the ZoneAlarm site.

J: It did & I've installed without problems. However, I now want to enter to win the ipad. When I go to type in my name, it comes up with pop up saying Zone Alarm wants access to ALL of my Facebook info, my friends, personal info, etc.

L: We apologize for the delay. I will be with you shortly.

L.: J do you have the link to this download

L: I am not aware of any contest or promotion

J: It's a Facebook promotion. There was a pop up from ZoneAlarm when I started the computer. Took me to your Facebook page

J: There's a "win ipad" tab on your FB page...

L.: Because you have the free version.

L.: Sorry

J: yep

L: I have to check this out.

J: OK, thanks. I'm on two computers so I'll let this one sit...

L.: Can you get the link up that it sent you?

J: www.facebook.com/home.php?#1/ZoneAlarmFirewall

L: Thanks

L: It just takes me to my facebook page.

L: Do you have ZoneAlarm as a friend?

J: I liked

L: Ok

J: Yep, logged in & "liked" it first

J: I'll log out on the other computer, see if I can find it

L.: I am searching and I do not see this promotion

J: on your search in facebook type in zonealarm and it'll be one of the options... no sspaces

L.: Ok

L: That might be from CNET.

J: I got to it via a pop up message from you guys when my computer started up...

J: I have other zone alarm stuff on my computer, it wanted to know if I wanted to add free firewall

L: I cannot find this link but I see posts about a free Ipad.

L: If you are already running the free firewall then you don't need to.

J: I think I'm going to uninstall... I'm not liking that it wants my personal info, and that you don't know about it... hate to find out I was hacked or something

L: I will give you the uninstall tool

L: If possible, please try to run the universal uninstaller found at the link below. This tool will automatically remove all ZoneAlarm data from your computer:

L: http://download.zonealarm.com/bin/free/support/cpes_clean.exe

L: When the download box pops up, choose SAVE. In the next box choose Save to Desktop, then run the file from there and follow the on screen prompts to complete the uninstall. Be sure to restart the computer when prompted.

J: I'm gonna post a message on the page & let everyone know I discussed with ZoneAlarm & no knowledge of page, there are over 10,000 people on the page...

J: thanks

L: Hang on

L: I got the page. .: I want to get more info on this before I say any more.

J: ok

L: J is this a good e-mail to contact you back at?

L: j@...com

J: yes, sorry, walked away for a second

L: That is fine.

J: Are we finished & you're going to email me, or should I hang on?
